Despite its low price, Tecno Pop 7 Pro (bf7) wear a premium looks and has an attractive big display. The phone also features a USB Type-C port, high RAM, high storage space and big battery. Pop 7 Pro is also bundled with recent software and up-to-date features.
However, like many others at this price point, the camera system on the Tecno Pop 7 Pro falls below average, though photos still look okay. The phone's processing speed is slightly on the slow side too.
By the way, Pop 7 Pro is the latest model of the Tecno Pop series, and the successor to the Tecno Pop 6 (BE7).
Design-wise, Pop 7 Pro looks different from the Pop 6 and the previous models. Though, in its own unique way, the earlier Pop 6 tried to look good by having a U-shape notch, but the phone still maintained the bland and dated design of the prior Tecno Pop 5.
However, unlike the two earlier phones, Tecno Pop 7 Pro sports a premium and attractive design. The phone also has a stylish camera bump, trendy flat edges and flat back cover. The display of the latest phone also look more appealing and slightly clearer than that of the Tecno Pop 6. The screen also has a bigger size of 6.56-inch, compared to 6.1-inch of the earlier model. Though the screen is still a 720p one; which is what's expected at this price point.
The rear camera on this phone is also better than that of the earlier model, but the front-facing camera remain the same. In other words, Tecno Pop 7 Pro comes with a 5-megapixel selfie lens like the Pop 6, and it also features a dual-lens rear camera. But the earlier phone's 8-megapixel main rear sensor has been upgraded to 13-megapixel sensor on the Pop 7 Pro. As a result, photos taken with the latest phone are slightly clearer and more detailed than the ones taken with the earlier model.
Even, despite having a 5-megapixel front-facing camera like the earlier phone. selfies from the Pop 7 Pro look better better.
Furthermore, it's surprising to see USB Type-C port on the Tecno Pop 7 Pro; because the feature is rare at this price point. What is even more surprising is that the latest phone is equipped with higher RAM of 3GB/4GB and higher storage space of 64GB.
However, the phone is powered by the Helio A22 CPU, which is a typical entry-level CPU, and it's common among other budget or cheap android phones. Nonetheless, this CPU is more better than the MT6739WA that's inside the earlier Pop 6. Besides, Helio A22 is a suitable processor at this price point.
Meanwhile, Tecno Pop 7 Pro is pre-installed, out-of-the-box, with the recent Android 12 OS. Also running on top of the Android OS is the recent version of Tecno HiOS custom UI.
The processing speed of the Pop 7 Pro is okay but it slows down once in a while. Though the phone is not expected to move quickly as mid-range or other budget phones with better chipsets, still, with its 3GB/4GB of RAM, the phone delays a little, even in loading regular apps.
I don't think it's the phone's entry-level CPU that's entirely responsible for that. I think another major factor that contributes to the slightly slow performance of the Tecno Pop 7 Pro is the full fledged Android 12 OS; which is running on this entry-level CPU.
Nonetheless, as i said earlier, Pop 7 Pro performance is okay at this price point. The performance can still be boosted through MemFusion. MemFusion enables you to boost the performance of this phone by converting up to 3GB, out of the phone's inbuilt storage, to Virtual RAM. Thereby, increasing the default 3GB of RAM of the Pop 7 Pro, up to 6GB.
The rest of the Tecno Pop 7 Pro features are similar to those of a standard entry-level phone. For instance, as i mentioned earlier, this phone comes with USB Type-C port. Tecno Pop 7 Pro also has a typical 5000mAh battery and features standard 10W charging. The phone also has a rear mounted fingerprint reader and support USB OTG.
Price And Design Colours:
Currently, the starting price of the Tecno Pop 7 Pro is 68,000 Naira. And it's available in three colours of Endless Black, Uyuni Blue, and Nebula Purple.
Design: Premium Looks.
Apart from having a bigger and prettier display, Tecno Pop 7 Pro also wear a more appealing looks than the previous models of the Tecno Pop.
Though, like those of the previous ones, the screen of the Pop 7 Pro still features a drop-notch, but the latest phone has a taller aspect ratio and thinner bezels. Also compared to the curved edges of the earlier models, Pop 7 Pro has flat edges, like most of the recent mid-range phones. And it is these modifications that make Pop 7 Pro to look totally different and sleeker than its predecessors.
On the back of the phone is a large and premium-looking camera bump; which also enhanced the sleek looks of the Pop 7 Pro. The two rear cameras of the phone also come with pretty circular rings. And the two cameras are neatly arranged inside the bump, alongside fingerprint reader and LED flash.
The arrangements of ports and buttons on the Tecno Pop 7 Pro are also similar to those of an average entry-level phone. You have the volume keys and power button on the right edge of this phone, while its 4G Dual Nano-SIM+microSD Card slot is located on the left edge. The latest phone's microphone, 3.5mm audio jack, and mono speaker, are also placed on its bottom edge, alongside the USB Type-C port.
Average Camera Set-Up, But Decent Photos:
The 13-megapixel dual rear camera of the Tecno Pop 7 Pro is made up of a 13-megapixel main sensor and a QVGA sensor (which assist the main camera in taking clear picture, especially in low-light environments).
Expected of an average 13-megapixel rear sensor, the main rear camera of the Pop 7 Pro was able to take a slightly clearer and more detailed photos than the 8-megapixel rear camera on the earlier model. But when you compared the photos (from this phone) to those of the slightly more expensive entry-level phones with a similar 13-megapixel rear camera, colours appear a little less saturated, but the clarity and brightness remain almost the same. Generally speaking, and for a phone at this price point, photos taken with Tecno Pop 7 Pro look quite okay.
Also on the other hand, and despite having a 5-megapixel lens like its predecessor, the selfies from the front-facing camera of the Tecno Pop 7 Pro are clearer and have better colours than the ones taken with the earlier phone's front camera.
Even the clarity of the selfie from this phone seems to be better than that of the Infinix Smart 7 Plus (x6517) which has the same 5-megapixel selfie lens. But the selfie from the Infinix phone has more saturated colours.
Infinix Smart 7 Plus has a lot in common with Tecno Pop 7 Pro. Learn more about Infinix Smart 7 Plus vs Tecno Pop 7.
Note: Selfie from the Tecno Pop 7 Pro also look much better than the one from the Itel A60 (A662L). The selfie of the Tecno phone selfie also look almost like that of the Redmi A1 Plus. By the way, both the Itel A60 and Redmi A1 Plus also feature 5-megapixel front cameras, but the two phones have 8-megapixel main rear sensors, compared to the 13-megapixel main sensor of the Pop 7 Pro.
Meanwhile, both the front and rear cameras of the Tecno Pop 7 Pro are capable of shooting 1080p videos at 30fps (frame per seconds).
A Big And Pretty Display:
Though the screen of the earlier Pop 6 looked nice, yet, the one on the Pop 7 Pro looks better. Also, despite that the screen also features a 720p resolution like that of the Pop 6, it has a slightly different pixels of 1612-by-720. But, due to its bigger size, the screen of the latest phone has a lower pixel density (or sharpness) of 269ppi, compared to the 282ppi of the Pop 6 display.
Yet, in spite of its lower pixel density, the screen of the Pop 7 Pro looks slightly clearer, more vivid, and has brighter colours than that of the earlier model. Even compared to the one on the slightly more expensive Infinix Smart 7 Plus, Pop 7 Pro screen seems to be slightly brighter and look better. This screen also rivals the one on the Itel S18 Pro which features 1080p resolution. The display of the Tecno Pop 7 Pro also offers decent level of brightness, which makes it to be usable under direct sunlight.
Performance And Software:
Although Tecno Pop 7 Pro wear the looks of more expensive android phones, but it doesn't pack their processing powers.
The MediaTek Helio A22 CPU that powered this phone is a 12nm Quad-Core CPU. In other words, the CPU is an entry-level one. Yet, as i mentioned before, this processor is more better than the one that's inside the earlier Pop 6, and it's also more better than the Unisoc SC9832E that came with the recent Itel A60. Besides, at this price point, Helio A22 is a suitable chipset for the Pop 7 Pro. A better chipset might have caused the phone to attract higher price.
And considering the phone's performance, as i said earlier, i think the appropriate Android OS for this phone is Go Edition (light version) of the Android 12, in order to get optimum performance from this phone. Because a few others in this segment, such as the Redmi A1 Plus; which features the same Helio A22 CPU, even with 2GB of RAM, was able to maintain certain level of consistent performance while running the Go Edition of the Android 12 OS. So i think the phone would run better if it comes with the Android 12 Go Edition.
Nonetheless you can still aid the performance of this phone through MemFusion. This enables you to convert up to 3GB of free space (out of the phone's inbuilt storage) to virtual RAM. Thereby allowing you to increase the 3GB or 4GB RAM of the Pop 7 Pro up to 6GB and 7GB, respectively.
Also despite that the 64GB internal storage space of this phone is on the high side, it can still be expanded up to 128GB (Gigabyte), via microSD card.
Same 5000mAh Battery, But USB Type-C Port And Standard 10W Charging.
Tecno Pop 7 Pro Comes with a 5000mAh battery like its predecessor, but the MicroUSB port on the earlier phone has been replaced with USB Type-C port. The latest phone also features standard 10W charging. And with its out-of-the-box 10W charger, it'll take you over two and half hours to fully charge this phone's battery from zero percent.
