Though Xiaomi Redmi 9 has gotten a more attractive look, bigger 6.53-inch display (with FullHD+ resolution), quad-lens back camera, Helio G80 MediaTek chipset and latest Android 10 OS, yet, the latest phone still retain the design and other features of the Redmi 8.
For instance, Redmi 9 still maintain the same curve edges and similar waterdrop-notched display of the earlier phone. The latest phone also brings back Redmi 8's 8MP front facing camera, USB-C port and 18W fast charging.
Xiaomi Redmi 9 is fitted with a 5020mAh battery; which is just a little higher than the 5000mAh that came with the earlier phone. And it also comes in two variants option of 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB.
Verdict And Price:
Though, Xiaomi Redmi 9 retain the design and most of the features of its predecessor, yet, the latest phone's prettier look, bigger 1080p display, quad back camera and the recent Helio G80 gaming chipset, make it more appealing than its predecessor.
Furthermore, and compared to those of the mid-range and flagship phones, Redmi 9 design and features may not be that impressive. Still, among many recent budget phones with similar price of about $139, only a few will have all the features of the Redmi 9 (mentioned above) and still includes USB-C port, NFC, 18W fast charging and IR Blaster; which enables your phone to also serve as a TV (and other related appliances) Remote control.
Meanwhile, it's only 4GB/64GB variant of the Redmi 9 that is currently available at a price of about 69,000 Naira, KSh:16,100.
Improved Design With Slight Bigger Screen And FullHD+ Resolution:
Xiaomi Redmi 9 has the same look and waterdrop notched-display as the Redmi 8. But the chin (bottom bezel) of the earlier phone did not return to the latest phone, this makes Redmi 9 to look prettier and have slightly higher screen to body ratio of 89.83%.
And in spite of its bigger size, the 6.53-inch display of the Redmi 9 is sharper than that of the earlier model. This is as a result of the latest phone's display FullHD+ (2340x1080) resolution, which makes the screen to have an higher pixel density of 394ppi. While the earlier phone's 6.22-inch HD+ display has a pixel density of 270ppi.
Turning it over, the positions of the Redmi 9's back cameras (and fingerprint reader) are similar to those of the Redmi 8. Yet, inspite its quad-lens camera, the latest phone camera module is shorter and appear smaller than that of the Redmi 8; which features dual camera.
Next to the camera module is another, but very small, enclosure which houses the LED flash and fourth camera of the Xiaomi Redmi 9.
Meanwhile, both of the bigger and smaller enclosures are found inside an engraved circle, which also contributes to the sleeker look of the latest phone.
Xiaomi Redmi 9 also comes in plastic body like the Redmi 8, yet while the front of the earlier model is protected by the Corning Glass 5, the latest phone's screen is protected by the Corning Glass 3. And as expected, Redmi 9 has a much heavier weight of 198g, compared to the 188g of the Redmi 8. Nonetheless, from its given 163.3x77.1x9.1mm dimensions, Xiaomi Redmi 9 is less thicker than the its predecessor.
By the way, Xiaomi Redmi 9 comes in three colour options of Carbon Gray, Sunset Purple and Ocean Green.
MediaTek Helio G80 Chipset, But Same RAM And ROM:
Xiomi Redmi 9 is powered by the recent Mediatek Helio G80 chipset, which is slightly better than the Qualcomm SD439 that's found on the Redmi 8.
Although, Helio G80 is a 12nm octa-core processor like the SD439, and it also has the same maximum clocks speed of 2.0GHz. Yet Helio G80 is an ARM Cortex-A55 (plus Cortex-A75) chipset while SD439 is an ARM Cortex-A53 chipset.
And because it's a gaming chipset, Helio G80 also has a better Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). In other words, and for a more pleasant gaming experience, Xiaomi Redmi 9 is fitted with the Mali-G52 MC2 GPU; with the clock speeds of up to 950MHz.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi Redmi 9 is running on the latest Android 10 OS alongside MIUI 12v. And as i mentioned earlier, the latest phone comes in two variants. The first variant features 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage space while the second variant is equipped with 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage capacity. Each of the phone's internal storage space can be expanded via microSD card of up to 1TB (Terabyte).
Quad-lens Back Camera But Same Front Camera:
The quad back camera of the Xiaomi Redmi 9 comprises of 13MP Main lens, 8MP Ultra-Wide angle lens with 118-degree FoV (Field of View), 2MP Depth Sensing lens and 5MP Macro lens. While the first three cameras are located inside the big camera module, the fourth camera or Macro lens is placed inside the smaller module alongside Led flash.
But despite its multiple back cameras and better lenses, the latest phone still features the same 8MP front facing camera that came with the ealier model. Xiaomi Redmi 9 also features Screen Flash like the Redmi 8 because the drop notches on both phones' displays don't give room for the Notification LED.
Meanwhile, the Redmi 9 back cameras are capable of shooting 1080p videos at 30fps (frames per second) while its front facing camera is capable shooting 720p at 30fps.
A Little Higher Battery Capacity:
Xiaomi Redmi 9's battery capacity is almost the same as that of the Redmi 8, because the latest phone comes with a 5020mAh battery; which is just a little higher than the 5000mAh of the earlier model.
Though, Redmi 9 has a bigger display and FullHD+ resolution, yet, with this big battery capacity, the phone will still last long on a single charge.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi Redmi 9 also support 18W fast charging like the earlier model, but it comes with 10W charger and USB-C cable, out of the box.
