Dell XPS 13 2020 (9300): Price, Review And Specifications.
Despite having almost the same dimensions as the 2019 model, Dell XPS 13 2020 (9300) looks sleeker and more elegant than the earlier laptop. The new look is mainly due to the laptop's display, which now features equal size, ultra-thin bezels. As a result, the new laptop offers a bigger screen and taller aspect ratio. In addition, Dell XPS 13 2020 also has a larger touchpad and an edge-to-edge keyboard.
Under the hood, Dell XPS 13 2020 still packed the 10th generation Intel chipset like the late 2019 model (Dell XPS 13 2019 7390). But, instead of having Intel Comet Lake processors, the latest laptop features Intel Ice Lake, which makes the high configuration variants of Dell XPS 13 2020 to have a better Intel Iris Plus Graphics.
Also, compare to the earlier model, Dell XPS 13 2020 also has a better sound output. However, the latest laptop has lower number of ports, compare to those of the earlier model.
The starting price of Dell XPS 13 2020 is $999, and it's for the one with the Intel Core-i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, 256GB storage space and FHD+ (non-touch) display. And with this amount, you can also get 13.5-inch Microsoft Surface laptop 3; which has a touch display, Intel Core-i5 cpu and 8GB of RAM, but 128GB storage capacity.
And you can also get the MacBook Air 2020 with the same $999; which has Intel Core-i3 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage.
Meanwhile, the Dell XPS 13 2020's Core-i7 variant with 16GB of RAM, 512GB storage capacity and UHD+ (4K) touchscreen, costs about $1,899.
Refreshing Look: Bigger Display, Keyboard, Touchpad And Different Aspect Ratio:
Dell has drastically reduced the chin (bottom bezel) of its year 2020 Dell XPS 13, something it should have done in the 2019 model when it it moved the controversial webcam to the top of the screen, its rightful spot. The reduction in the chin enables Dell XPS 13 2020 to have equal, 4 sided, ultra-thin bezels, which makes the laptop to appear all screen and more dainty than its predecessor.
Because the chin reduction brings about extra space, Dell replaces the standard 13.3 inch screen with a 13.4 inch one, which also made the PC company to turn its Dell XPS 13's standard 16:9 aspect ratio to 16:10, like that of the Macbook Air. As a result, Dell XPS 13 2020 display appears taller and it's also 6.8% bigger than that of the earlier model, therefore, offering more working space.
Apart from the display, another noticeable update that contributes to the new look of the ultrabook laptop is its edge-to-edge keyboard. Because the new laptop still has form factor of the earlier model, the edge-to-edge backlit keyboard brings about well spaced and bigger key caps, which also means that one should expect an improved and pleasant typing experience from the Dell XPS 13 2020.
The changes are not limited to the keyboard alone as the Precision touchpad of the latest Dell XPS 13 is also 17% larger. In addition, the laptop Fingerprint reader is also integrated to the power button.
Dell XPS 13 2020 Has Only 2 USB-C Ports like the MacBook Air:
Apart from sharing screen aspect ratio with the MacBook Air, Dell XPS 13 2020 also features 2 USB-C Thunderbolt like the Apple ultrabook laptop. In other words, the standard USB-C port, that used to come with the earlier models of Dell XPS 13, is missing on the Dell XPS 13 2020.
Interestingly, while Dell just removed the standard USB-C port from its Dell XPS 13, Microsoft just introduced it to its Surface laptop 3.
Furthermore, the Wedge shaped lock slot is also missing on the new laptop. Therefore, you now have the USB-C Thunderbolt port on the right side of the laptop, along with only 3.5mm audio jack, because, the MicroSD card reader has been moved to the left side; next to the second USB-C Thunderbolt port.
Though Better Speakers, But Other Features And Connections Remain The Same:
Introduced in the 2019 Model, the year 2020 model of Dell XPS 13 also feature the 2.25mm, 720p Widescreen webcam. The latest laptop also features Window Hello (with Infrared camera); for your laptop security's enhancements. Dell XPS 13 2020 also features Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 and Bluetooth 5.0.
Although, it's also powered by the MaxxAudio Pro, the latest model is equipped with two 2.5W (4W Max) speakers, instead of two 1W (2W) speakers, that came with the earlier model.
Different Screen Aspect Ratio And Resolution:
The implementation of 16:10 aspect ratio makes the latest laptop's 3.4 inch screen to have a FHD+ resolution of 1920x1200 (169ppi), instead of FHD (1920x1080) resolution of the previous Dell XPS' 13.3 inch display.
As result of its slightly higher pixel density (169ppi) the latest display is a little sharper than the previous one; which has a pixel density of 165ppi. Still, none of the two displays is as sharp as the 201ppi display of the 13.5 inch Surface laptop 3 or MacBook Air's 227ppi Retina Display.
Meanwhile the high-end variant of Dell XPS 13 2020 offers a much better and clearer UHD+ (3840x2400) display, which has 338ppi pixel density. But this variant, as i mentioned earlier, attract higher price of about $1,890 and it also consume more power than the non-UHD+ variants.
The new Dell XPS laptop screen also covered 100% RGBs and it also has 1500:1 contrast ratio like that of the earlier model. In addition, Dell boasts of 500-nit brightness (compare to 400-nit of the previous screen) and 90% DCI P3 colour gamut of the latest laptop screen. Though, it's one of the best display around, but, HP Spectre x360's display still offers a better 99% DCI P3 colour gamut.
Same Processor, O.S., Battery Capacity, But Core-i7 Variants Have Better GPU:
The latest Dell XPS 13 inch laptop is also powered by the 10th Gen. Intel CPU like Dell XPS 13 2019 (9370), but unlike the late last year model that's fitted with Intel Comet Lake Chipset, the latest Dell XPS 13 2020 features Intel Ice Lake Chipset, therefore, you should expect a slightly lower processing power from the new laptop, but better graphics performance (more on that later).
And like the earlier model, all the variants of the latest Dell XPS 13 are also pre-loaded with the Microsoft Windows 10 (64-Bit) Home Edition.
Furthermore, the RAM and storage configurations of Dell XPS 13 2020 are also similar to those of the earlier model. For instance, the base variant of the latest laptop is equipped with the 10th Gen. Intel Core-i3 processor, and it also has 4GB of RAM and 256GB (non-soldered) SSD storage.
While the high-end variant of Dell XPS 13 2020 which features Intel Core-i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD storage, is also the only variant that has 4K (UHD+) display. Nonetheless, Dell XPS 13 2020 can be configured up to 32GB of RAM and 2TB (Terabyte) storage.
And like its predecessor, Dell XPS 13 2020 doesn't have discrete GPU. Although, unlike the Core-i7 variants of the late 2019 model that feature Intel UHD Graphics 620, the Core-i7 variants of the latest Dell XPS 13 2020 feature Intel Iris Plus Graphics; for better video and gaming performance.
Meanwhile, Dell XPS 2020 13 also comes with the same 4 Cell, user non-removable battery, like the earlier model. And Dell says the 52Wh battery will last for more than 11.5 hours (though the variant with 4K display will last less than that). Nonetheless, one should expect similar battery life of previous model from the new laptop.
Colour Design Dimensions And Weight:
Like the previous models of Dell XPS 13 and a few other ultrabook laptops such as the MacBook Air and 13.5 inch Surface laptop 3, the new Dell XPS 13 also features aluminum frame.
And concerning its design colours, Dell XPS 13 2020 is available in Platinum Silver exterior with Black Carbon fiber interior or White Woven glass fiber interior.
While the 2019 model of the Dell laptop has 0.46x11.9x7.8 inches dimensions, the latest model has almost the same 0.58x11.6x7.8 inches dimensions. Though it is obvious that the previous model thickness is slightly less than that of the latest one, yet, both Dell XPS 13 2019 and Dell XPS 13 2020 have almost the same weight of 2.7 and 2.65 pounds respectively.
And while the non-touchscreen variant of Dell XPS 13 2020 weigh 2.65 pounds (1.2kg), the touch-screen variant comes with a slightly increased weight of 2.81 pounds (1.27kg). This makes the touch-screen variant to have almost the same weight as the 2.79 pounds (1.26kg) Microsoft Surface laptop 3 13.5-inch and 2.8 pounds (1.29kg) MacBook Air 2020.
Though, despite its taller and slightly wider display, the 13.5-inch Surface laptop 3 has the least thickness of 0.57mm, compare to the 0.58mm and 0.63mm thickness of the Dell XPS 13 2020 and MacBook Air 2020 respectively.
