The recently unveiled Tecno Phantom 9 is the successor to the Tecno Phantom 8, which was released almost two years ago.
Save for the same RAM and battery capacity, Tecno Phantom 9 is quite different from its predecessor; in design and specifications.
Even, among its peers, Phantom 9 is in a class of its own. Because, apart from its aesthetic appearance, higher megapixels Selfie camera, AI-enable Triple rear cameras and higher storage space, Tecno has managed to put a few trendy features, mostly found in the high-end phones, in the new Phantom 9. For instance, the Tecno Phantom 9 features In-display fingerprint reader and Amoled display, though, the functionalities of these features may not be as perfect as those ones that come with the high premium phones such as Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S10.
Despite all the interesting features, and being the company's flagship phone, there are certain area of the phone, of which, i was expecting something better. For instance, the company returns the same slightly less battery life of 3500mAh, which came with the previous Phantom 8, but Tecno doesn't return the USB Type-C that came with the previous model. In addition, the Phantom 9 features not-that-powerful Mediatek P35 chipset.
Though, on the other hand, the price of the new phone comes into play, because the starting price of the Tecno Phantom 9 is currently 90,500 Naira. Perhaps, increasing and inclusion of those things might have attracted higher price.
Phantom 9 Design.
Compared to the 5.7-inch screen of its predecessor, Tecno Phantom 9 offers ample 6.4-inch display. Despite its bigger screen size, the new phone is lighter, slimmer and sleeker than the previous model.
In fact, as a result of its 19.5:9 aspect ratio the new Phantom 9 is also slender than its predecessor which features 18:9 aspect ratio.
Meanwhile, in an attempt to achieve the trendy bezel-less phone concept, Phantom 9 features teardrop notch (another form of waterdrop notch; found on the recent Infinix S4), and tecno called it Dot-Notch.
The Dot-notch houses the new phone's Selfie camera. However, Phantom 9 doesn't feature Notification LED, instead, it comes with two LED flash lights, and they are located at the top edge of the new phone, each on both sides of the Dot notch.
Despite the fact that Phantom 9 lacks top bezel, the new phone still features bottom bezel, though among its peers, Phantom 9 bottom bezel is one of the slimmest.
Meanwhile, towards the bottom of the screen, close to the bezel, is the location of the Non-visible fingerprint sensor, which is popularly known as In-Display fingerprint sensor (more on it later).
Moving on to the back of the new phone, because there is no physical fingerprint reader, you'll only be confronted with triple rear cameras, which are arranged in a vertical manner, along with the Quad-LED flash. Meanwhile, the backing of the Tecno Phantom 9 is made up of the Polycarbonate (glass-like material) with Lapland Aurora finish.
RAM, Processing power and Software:
Tecno Phantom 9 is powered by Mediatek 6765 Helio P35 Octa-Core processor, with 2.35GHz processing speed. Also, for its GPU (Graphics Processing Units), the new phone is fitted with the PowerVR GE8322.
Although, the chipset may not be that impressive, most especially for those that play heavier and extremely fast games, or other related tasks that requires higher processing and graphics power. However, for other usual activities such as multitasking, playing of average games and opening of multiple browser pages, Tecno Phantom 9 is quite fast and responsive.
Like its predecessor, the new Phantom 9 is fitted with 6GB of RAM, and that's where the similarities ended, because the new phone features 128GB of internal storage, which is twice of that of the previous model. The internal storage of the phone can also be expanded through MicroSD Card, up to 256GB.
When it comes to the software, Tecno Phantom 9 features Android 9 Pie O.S. (Operating System), along with the Tecno's own HiOS 5.0.
The New Phantom 9 Sports Amoled Display:
Just like the way Infinix Introduces amoled screen to its latest Note 6, Tecno also introduces Amoled display to the new Phantom 9.
Amoled screen, which use to be found only on the high premium phones, is now gradually finding its ways into the mid-range phones.
Better than those of the IPS-LCD, AMOLED display offers higher colour gamut, better contrast and it also covers wider viewing angle.
Meanwhile, Tecno Phantom 9 6.4-inch Amoled display is equipped with a Full HD+ (2340x1080) resolution, which also implies that the Phantom 9 Amoled screen has a pixel density of 403ppi. Therefore, with this higher definition Amoled screen, you'll be able to see and enjoy detailed and high quality image of your favorite HD games and 1080p movie files.
It should be noted that the Phantom 9 Amoled screen may appear slightly saturated or not perfectly calibrated like the ones found in the high end phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S10.
In-Display Fingerprint sensor:
Although the phone features Face Unlock, there is no traditional or physical fingerprint reader, either on the back or front of the new phone, instead, Phantom 9 features non-visible fingerprint scanner; which is better known as the In-Display fingerprint reader, and it is placed beneath the phone's screen surface.
Meanwhile, compared to two other forms of security enhancements i.e. Face Unlock and traditional Fingerprint reader, Tecno Phantom 9 In-Display fingerprint sensor is neither fast nor simple, as one would have expected.
Triple Rear cameras:
Like many recent flagship phones, Tecno Phantom 9 also features AI-enable triple (16MP+8MP+2MP) back cameras. And this back also comprises of the primary camera lens, Ultra-Wide-Angle camera lens and telephoto camera lens.
The Main or Primary camera is fitted with 16MP lens, the Ultra-Wide-Angle camera is fitted with 8MP lens and it has the ability to capture 120 degree field of view, i.e. it's designed to capture more of a view or content without you having to move back. The 2MP camera lens is for the telephoto shots, I.e. the one that blur backgrounds to enhance the subject of the photo.
Whether Wide-angle shots or normal shots, with the aid of AI-driven features such as Auto Scene Detection, the Phantom 9 rear cameras guarantee sharper, clearer and more natural photos.
On the front of the Phantom 9 is the 32MP Selfie camera, and this higher megapixels lens delivers detailed and brighter low light selfies, especially, with the help of the dual LED flash lights. Also, this selfie camera, like the one on the back of the phone, also supports bokeh pictures, though, with the help of the AI.
Return of the 3500 and lack of USB-Type C:
The battery capacity of the new Tecno Phantom 9 is not satisfactory. Even, many mid-range phones with low price, such as the Infinix Hot 7, was fitted with better 4000mAh battery capacity. But, Tecno returns the same 3500mAh battery, of the previous Phantom 8 to the Phantom 9.
Yet, and despite sharing battery capacity with the earlier model, Tecno Phantom 9 doesn't have the USB-Type C port, which came with the previous phone. Instead, Tecno equipped the new Phantom 9 with the traditional Micro-USB port.
